Some very strange things are taking place in the World In Which We Live...Deming, New Mexico, USA.

Ann and I have been keeping track of the altitude from the same exact spot daily.  Our altitude changes, sometimes daily, sometimes hourly.

Once again our southern mountains

have started smoking.  These photos were

ED NOTE:

Below is an email Ann and I sent to South West Volcano Research Centre.  Dr. Trombley is the Director & Principal Research Volcanologist.  Dr. Trombley looked at our photos of the smoking mountains.  Here is Dr. Trombley's reply...

Hi Dennis & Ann !

Thank you so very much for your interesting e-mail and link.

It is not really too unusual to have some minor volcanic activity in your area.  After all, I believe that your area is part of the Colorado Plateau and you are correct in the fact that there are many "dormant" volcanoes in your area.  You are also correct in your statement that "dormant" does not mean "dead".  Dormant simply means that the volcano is in repose.  Usually when a volcano is "dead" we classified it as "extinct".  But I can tell you first-hand that there have been occasions where extinct volcanoes have re-activated.  Not too often -- but it does happen once in a great while.

I have looked at your website link and have concluded that you are probably witnessing some fumarolic activity and de-gassing.  This is not unusual if there is some seismic activity near the volcanoes - which there probably is and is acting as a "trigger".  I do not think that you have a volcano in the process of re-activation however.  Without having a sample of the ash you have seen, I cannot comment realistically.  But if you send me a small sample, I'll be happy to analyze it for you and let you know what we can find.

Again, many thanks for the e-mail and do keep us posted if there are further developments.

Respectfully,

SOUTHWEST VOLCANO RESEARCH CENTRE

Subject: Volcanic activity?

Dear Dr. Trombley:

We are Dennis and Ann Bossack of Deming, New Mexico.  We appear to have some minor volcanic activity from the mountains surrounding our home.  This has been going on for quite some time now.  We have small amounts of what seems to be ash that settle on our car, home and property.  This is never enough to procure a good sample, but it does appear to be ash.

Here is a link to our web site with photos of the mountains.  Please let us know what you think is happening here.

There is a month-by-month menu at the top of the above web page.  If you would, please take a look at some of the past photos, too.  We are looking forward to hearing from you.  We do know that "dormant" does not mean "dead"...

Sincerely,

Dennis and Ann Bossack
